If she's still alive, and if he can find her, it'll lead to a crucial choice. Go for the sure thing and complete his task, or let her live in hopes that she can save his beloved Laurie and ultimately risk the unforgiving wrath of The Company.

Generally, the shorter a story is, the less complicated the storyline must be in order to make some sort of sense. Authors who delight in twisty complicated plots have to simplify things considerably in their shorter works or they risk completely losing their readers. For that reason, I was quite pleasantly surprised by Ernie Lindsey's "Hard Place," a novelette about a very talented hit man that packs more surprises and plot twists in fifty pages than most novels ten times that long and does so in a manner readers can easily follow. As you might guess, it's difficult to summarize the story line of "Hard Place" in a paragraph or two but I'll try. Boom, formerly a top hit man for a clandestine agency called, unimaginatively, the Company, is dispatched to kill a scientist whose energy research could put a crimp into the profits of major oil companies. Boom's last mission was a spectacular failure, and this job represents somewhat of a probationary second chance for him. However, the mission doesn't start too well when he discovers the scientist missing and possibly killed by someone else. Now he must find her... dead to prove she's gone, or alive so that he can finish the job.
As if that weren't enough of a burden for a man on possibly his last job, Boom's wife is dying of cancer and he learns that the missing scientist, in addition to being an energy researcher, had also been on the verge of a major breakthrough in cancer research, which could lead to a successful course of treatment for Boom's wife, who has advanced cancer. Now Boom faces a dilemma: do his job and his wife surely dies, or save the scientist and possibly save his wife, while also possibly dooming himself in the process.
Lindsey could easily have stretched these events out to novel length, especially if he had gone into more detail about the specifics of the Company's inner workings, Boom's past and his relation with the other characters he encounters. However, Lindsey pares down his explanations to the essentials. We get an idea of who the various characters are and their relationship with each other, but not much more. What we do get in greater detail are the various twists and turns of the plot, worthy of Robert Ludlum at his best. For much of the book, it's difficult to say just who the white hats and the black hats are in the story, and readers probably won't figure it out on their own, but they'll enjoy watching Boom piece things together.
"Hard Place" is a masterful piece of story construction. Lindsey cleverly applies the "Law of Conservation of Detail." Just about everyone Boom meets and every seemingly insignificant item he comes across come into play later in the book. In addition, Lindsay takes his time revealing the details of just what went on in that failed mission in Morocco and, as he expands on his description of the earlier events, readers become increasingly aware they are tied into Boom's current assignment.
Despite the tricky plot, Lindsey doesn't forget that he is writing an action story about a hit man on a dangerous assignment, so there's also a decent amount of well written action in "Hard Place." The action interludes make it easier for Lindsey to control the pace of the story, so that it doesn't get bogged down in long winded explanations. Readers who care to think about "Hard Place" carefully after reading it will notice a number of plot holes and implausibilities, but none of them will interfere with anyone's enjoyment of the story while reading it. "Hard Place" is a wild roller coaster ride of a tale that will have readers hoping they haven't seen the last of Boom or his creator.

Hard Place A Crime Fiction Novella edition by Ernie Lindsey Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I definitely want to read more about Boom and Laurie. This was a nice little introduction to what may be a nice book series, and it is certainly not your average, ordinary mystery!
I truly enjoyed this short story. At first I didn't care whether or not the lead character died or not, since he is an assassin but by the end I was rooting for both he and his wife. I'd read more of these characters. Yep, I'd recommend this story and author.
Was disappointed at first that this was a short story but the writing within turned my frown upside down. An assassin is challenged when his target could be able to save his wife's life. There are twists in the story that I never saw coming but enjoyed very much. Highly recommended.
I thought I'd read a little bit before I went to bed but wound up finishing it! It's about 45 pages or so and keeps you entertained. Strong narrative drive - really a fun read. I know the plot sounds overwrought but you won't notice any problems while it races along.
I've already ordered another one of the author's books.
Mr. Lindsey has a style of writing that both entertains and completely draws you in from beginning to end. In this story he does not disappoint; the characters are vivid, the scenes are well defined, and the outcome is anything but obvious. I've found very few writers who can make me forget I'm in a room full of people and not in the scenes with their characters... Ernie is one of them.
Alan Parker (Boom) works for The Company. Their motto is "eliminate the variables". He has been in their employment for ten years and only messed up once in Morocco. In actuality, they like him because he doesn't normally leave any mess and there isn't any cleanup!
There is a lot on Boom's mind recently. His wife, Laurie, has cancer and is not responding to the experimental treatments.
Enter Dr. Anna Jefferson, an expert in research for biofuel alternatives. On the side, she is also working on an experimental cure for cancer.
Here comes the moral dilemma for Boom. The Company gives him the order to kill her but will he be able to do it?
The description of Cupcake, the Cook in the Diner, is wonderful. I can see him flipping the bacon on the grill in his distinct garb. Plus, Cupcake is wide-eyed with excitement at the prospect of being able to help Boom. It is a priceless description!
The ending will leave you shaking your head in amazement. Excellent twist and turn of events.
Highly recommended...
I only discovered Ernie Lindsey last week, since then this is the second of his books that I've read and I'm hooked! "Hard Place" is a fast paced, totally unpredictable read! I had no clue how it would end until the very last page! I HIGHLY recommended "Hard Place" to anyone who loves well written, suspense filled stories! And the highest of praise to Ernie Lindsey for such a great book! Now, I'm off to read another of his wonderful books.
